March 2014's report live!
From the best of the 'New Australia' to the wines of 'The New Douro', we cover the gamut of prices and styles in this month's report. Also: more Majestic offers, Sainsbury's Southern Hemisphere selection, online merchant WineTrust100 and reports from 'SITT' featuring wines from the UK's smaller independent wine importers. We round-off by sampling from the portfolios of two significant wine importers, Bancroft Wines and Liberty Wines.
Wine of the Month
Tahbilk 1860 Vines Shiraz 2006
Yes, the grapes for this wine really do come from vines planted in 1860, so a taste of history. You wouldn't expect the wine to be cheap, but my word this delivers: super ripe, blue black fruit concentration with a smooth layer of cocoa, but a certain steely presence too. There is a gamy aspect, cedar and spice yet on the palate it is beautifully pitched with effortless intensity. This should have substantial cellaring potential. £89.95 at winedirect.co.uk
